Short answer: send money from DBS, OCBC or MariBank straight into your own WeChat wallet balance. First verify your WeChat Pay and turn on receiving in the 「跨境汇款 微汇款」 Mini Program. DBS and OCBC then make you wait 12 hours after adding a new recipient, so start at least a day before you need the money.
Paying from your balance avoids the 3% fee on foreign-card payments above ¥200. The catch is that you can't send leftover balance back to Singapore.
Why top up instead of linking a card?
A linked Singapore card pays for each purchase, but it doesn't load your wallet. WeChat charges 3% of the full amount on card payments above ¥200 (TenPay rules), so a ¥1,000 dinner costs an extra ¥30 before your bank's own fees. OCBC confirms that no transaction fee applies when you pay from your wallet balance.
Balance also does more than a linked card. OCBC lists merchant and personal QR payments, Mini Programs, transfers and Red Packets among its uses.
DBS vs OCBC vs MariBank
| DBS Remit | OCBC | MariBank | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer fee | Zero | Zero | $0 until 31 Dec 2026 (S$5 listed fee) |
| Wait for a new recipient | 12 hours | 12 hours | None listed |
| Arrival | Almost instant | Normally within 30 minutes of verification | Almost immediate after you collect the first transfer by text link |
| Exchange rate | Not published; about 0.6% off market for S$101+ in one June 2026 user report | Not published; shown in the app | Not published; shown in the app |
| Best for | Existing DBS or POSB customers | Existing OCBC customers | Forgot to set up early |
Which should you pick? Use the bank you already have, then compare the final RMB amount if you have more than one. That amount matters more than "zero fees", because the cost sits in the exchange rate.
DBS says its service is open to Singaporeans, PRs and foreigners residing in Singapore. We couldn't find an official UOB wallet top-up route as of November 2026. Singtel Dash also sends to WeChat for a S$5 fee, but it says the recipient must be a Chinese national, so it won't suit most Singaporeans topping up their own wallet.
How to top up, step by step
- Verify WeChat Pay. Non-Chinese users verify with a passport. Our WeChat Pay setup guide covers this.
- Turn on receiving. In WeChat, search for 「跨境汇款 微汇款」 and open the Mini Program. Tap Receive (我要收款), agree to the terms, enter your WeChat Pay password and complete identity verification. Choose Wallet Balance as where to receive funds. If the page is in Chinese, tap … and then Translate.
- Copy your exact name. In the Mini Program, open Receive and then Business Cards for Receiving Money (收款名片). Use the name shown there when you add yourself in your bank app.
- Add yourself as a recipient using the path in the table below. Enter the mobile number linked to your WeChat. Singapore numbers work.
- Send the money. Check the RMB amount before you confirm. In June 2026, some DBS users reported a noticeably worse rate below S$100, while another said a friend didn't see that threshold, so compare the rate at the amount you plan to send.
- Check your balance in Me → Pay & Services → Wallet.
- Pay from Balance (零钱). If you also linked a card, check the payment method on the confirm screen. A payment charged to the card can still attract the 3% fee.
| Bank | Where to add yourself | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| DBS | digibank → Overseas Transfer → add a recipient → Weixin (WeChat) | For personal savings or household expenses only. Full DBS guide |
| OCBC | OCBC app → Pay & Transfer → Overseas → Add new payee → Wallet → China → Weixin Wallet | OCBC sets a minimum for each wallet. A Trip.com guide reports CNY 2,200 for China wallets, so check the app first. Full OCBC guide |
| MariBank | MariBank app → Overseas Transfer → China → Weixin Pay | Enter your name in Latin letters and choose Savings / Salary (to Self Only). Weixin may ask for extra details, such as a payslip. Full MariBank guide |
Limits to know
DBS and MariBank both list these limits for transfers to Weixin Pay:
- CNY 50,000 per transfer
- 15 transfers a month
Annual limits are worded differently. DBS lists CNY 800,000 a year. MariBank lists CNY 800,000 into a linked bank card, but CNY 300,000 into your wallet balance. If you're topping up your balance, plan around the lower figure.
MariBank says the monthly and annual limits are shared across all transfers to your Weixin Pay account, so topping up from another provider may count too. The limit on how much you can spend from WeChat is separate.
Minimums vary as well. HardwareZone users reported about S$10 at DBS and RMB 55 at MariBank, so OCBC's reported CNY 2,200 could be the bigger hurdle for a small test transfer.
The catch: money can't come back to Singapore
DBS says funds in your WeChat balance can only be withdrawn to a bank account in Mainland China. Most travellers don't have one, so treat a top-up as money you'll spend in China.
Top up in stages rather than moving your whole budget on day one. OCBC says the balance doesn't expire, so anything left can wait for your next trip.
Top-up not arriving?
- Receiving isn't set up. Finish step 2 in the Mini Program. DBS says transfers won't arrive until you have a Recipient Card.
- The name or number doesn't match. OCBC warns that a mismatch can get a transfer delayed, rejected or refunded.
- It's your first MariBank transfer. Weixin texts you a link, so your number must be able to receive SMS. Tap the link and choose Collect Transfer within 48 hours, or the money goes back to your MariBank account.
- You haven't waited long enough. OCBC says to allow about 30 minutes after verification. Follow the Tenpay Global Remittance official account for status updates.
One HardwareZone user reported a "receive fail" on a DBS transfer to their son, and said DBS then wouldn't let them add him as a recipient a third time. If your transfer fails, check the details above before you retry, and contact your bank if the money doesn't return.
When you don't need to top up
Pre-loading isn't the only way to avoid a poor deal. Two options leave no money stuck in a wallet:
- OCBC Scan & Pay: scan merchant QR codes in the OCBC app, and your SGD account is debited when you pay. OCBC charges no transaction fee, even above ¥200, but its Weixin Pay and UnionPay rates include a 2% mark-up. See the OCBC app guide.
- DBS UnionPay Platinum Debit Card: DBS waives the 3% fee on Alipay and WeChat Pay payments above ¥200. See how the card compares with DBS Remit.
Visiting Singapore without a local bank account? These top-ups won't work for you, so link a card to WeChat Pay instead.
FAQ
Can I top up my WeChat wallet from Singapore?
Yes. DBS, OCBC and MariBank can all send money from a Singapore account into your own WeChat wallet balance. Your WeChat Pay must be verified, and you need to set up receiving in the 微汇款 Mini Program first.
Can non-Chinese citizens top up a WeChat wallet?
Yes. OCBC says its service is designed for Chinese and non-Chinese citizens. DBS and MariBank accept recipients verified with a passport, excluding passports issued by Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan.
Is topping up WeChat from Singapore free?
DBS and OCBC advertise zero transfer fees. MariBank waives its S$5 Weixin Pay fee under a promotion ending 31 Dec 2026. All three still earn from the exchange rate, so compare the amount shown in each app.
How long does a WeChat wallet top-up take?
DBS and OCBC apply a 12-hour cooling period to new recipients. After that, OCBC says funds normally arrive within 30 minutes once your details are verified. MariBank's steps don't list a cooling period.
Can I get my WeChat balance back to Singapore?
No. DBS says WeChat balance can only be withdrawn to a bank account in Mainland China. The balance doesn't expire, so you can keep it for your next trip.
Can I top up Alipay the same way?
Not with OCBC or MariBank if you're a foreigner. OCBC says Alipay wallet top-ups are currently only for recipients registered with a Chinese Mainland Resident Identity Card, and MariBank's Alipay transfers are for recipients with a Chinese National ID.
